What exactly is a home cinema?

Home cinema systems come in all sizes and types, and in widely varying price segments. Moreover, the name “home cinema” is also used to denote a room in the home set up for watching movies….

A home cinema – also called a home theater – refers to:

  • The audiovisual equipment needed to create a cinema experience in the home environment
  • A specific room in the home where that audiovisual equipment is used
  • Any combination of the above

So much for theory. In practice, the term “home cinema” is used for a wide range of solutions and options, and that in all possible price ranges. One extreme is a system consisting of nothing more than a somewhat larger TV and a soundbar, while the other extreme involves a large, specially designed room – with or without multiple rows of seating – with high-end picture and sound equipment.

Quality level

Of course, all this does mean that the quality level of the home cinema experience can vary widely. Obviously, the simplest systems – a TV with a soundbar – are nowhere near matching the experience of a commercial cinema. On the other hand, a decent soundbar can add solid value to the sound of a TV, so they are certainly not useless.

At the other end of the spectrum is the high-end home cinema, which can approach the cinema experience in terms of picture and sound, and in some cases even match or exceed it (!). Between those two extremes, there are plenty of options – simply in the living room or in a separate room – to fully enjoy high-quality picture and sound.

And what about the media room?

The term “media room” stands for a space used, among other things, as a home cinema, but which can also contain, for example, a pool table, or a bar with a bar counter.

If you look at it from the practical side, you can say that it will usually be easier to install a performing home cinema system in a media room than in a living room. That’s because in a living room there are usually more furniture, more windows and more doors to consider. A dedicated home cinema room – read: a room used for nothing else – obviously offers even more opportunities to set it up optimally for the best possible picture and sound reproduction.

Summary

The term “home cinema” can refer both to audiovisual equipment and to a specific room where that equipment is used. Home cinema solutions come in widely varying price ranges, with some approaching the experience of a commercial cinema even better than others. If you have the possibility to provide a separate home cinema room, that is by all means the best – because most flexible – solution. Nevertheless, it is certainly possible to create an impressive home cinema experience in the living room….
